Better Ball Handling

This basketball video features excellent insight on becoming a great dribbler and ball handler.

Better Ball Handling

  • 30 application specific workouts; need to improve your cross-over, there's a workout for that; need to develop your off hand, there's a workout for that. What about improving hand strength? Yep, there's a workout for that too. And 27 others!
  • Almost 200 individual drills so you'll never get bored.
  • 3 hours and 10 minutes.
  • The more you can practice dribbling in a high variety of ways, the sharper your handles will be. Better Ball Handling gives you the tools to do it.
Overview

If you are familiar with my previous videos, you know that they tend to follow a specific formula. I organize every subject into a teaching progression - this means that the complexity of the skills and information build from the earliest chapters where I assume you know nothing about the subject to the final chapters where we discuss the highest level that subject demands. I make sure to not only clearly explain "what" to do and "how" to do it, I also take pains to explain the "why" behind it. Because of this, you can hop in at your own level and start getting better immediately.

This Ball Handling video is different, though. The progression is still there, but it is a work-out progression rather than a teaching progression. Unlike the skills of Shooting or 1-on-1 Offense, Ball Handling is much less a subject of form and sequence and much more a skill of repetition and drills. Your body learns how to dribble not by intellectually understanding the skill, but by doing it over and over and over.

That's why this video has almost 200 drills and 30 workouts - because training is the most important aspect to increasing your ability to handle the ball effectively.

Now, let's get started with the fun stuff! Lucky for you, dribbling is learned by doing! The more you can dribble the ball in a high variety of ways, the better your handles will be. And the more fun we can make this extremely important skill . . . well, more fun and more variety means more reps - and more reps make for a great ballhandler! Good luck and enjoy!

30 Workouts

Strength, Control, and Speed Workouts are designed to build the particular handles that you need on the ball in order to perform the moves and combinations that you'll find in later workouts.

Two and Three Ball Workouts are meant to train two components of your dribbling behavior. The first is overall coordination with both hands - this will not only improve your dominant hand, but will drive your towards becoming ambidextrous, equally skilled with either hand going any direction. The second is to increase your confidence. If you can handle two or three balls, then one ball is a piece of cake.

Moving and Moves Workouts add a realism to the stationary workouts. Eventually, you have to exercise your skills while on the move. That's the way the game is played.

Tennis Anyone? These tennis ball workouts are the single best way to train you to keep your head up and not watch the ball while you dribble. Eye-hand coordination is a premium for these workouts.

Specialty Workouts are named for special situations. Perhaps you need to develop a killer crossover or some particular dribble. I hear comments about how certain players need to work on their weak hand. Well, depending on which hand is the weaker hand, you'll find a Right Hand Workout and a Left Hand Workout where you never touch the ball with the other hand. These are also great for those times when one hand is injured, or anything is injured. You can really work on your weak hand!

Four All Around Workouts are designed to build your All-Around Skills within a specific time bracket. There's a 5-minute MVP, a 10-minute All-City, a 20-minute All-State, and a 30-minute All-American workout. You can combine them to accommodate any schedule. As an example; if you only have 15 minutes, then combine the 5-minute MVP with the 10-minute All-City workout.

You'll need a half-court or a full-court for the Imagine the Game Workouts. They are designed to imitate as many game-like actions as possible. Within each workout, there are opportunities for you to exercise some imagination and choose your dribble move.

I organized Better Ball Handling this way specifically so that YOU can choose the workout depending on your level of expertise. They all begin with simple, easy dribbles and then progress to more challenging levels. Even the workouts themselves are arranged from simple to complex. Many of them last only a few minutes. Now . . . I could have easily made them longer by increasing the number of reps, but that would have limited the number of workouts on the dvd. If you want to lengthen the workout, then just repeat the workout or double the reps yourself. I encourage you to personalize your training by choosing different workouts from different chapters and coming up with your own combinations. With 30 workouts, you could make a different combination each day for an entire year and still have a variety left! It's limited only by your imagination!
